MBB: Overtime heroics carry Lock Haven past Edinboro

In front of a raucous Thomas Fieldhouse, the LHU men’s basketball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a thrilling overtime-win over Edinboro.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Sophomore guard Eli Washington (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) converted three-key free throws down the stretch as the Lock Haven University (4-0, 1-0 PSAC) men's basketball team stormed back to earn an 83-80 victory over the visiting Edinboro Fighting Scots (2-3, 0-1 PSAC) on Friday night in Thomas Fieldhouse.
 
With the win, Lock Haven ties its best start since 1993-94 and remains unbeaten on the season.
 
Following a fast-paced start, the two teams settled in over the remainder of the first frame. Lock Haven made a pair of late surges in the half, but it was Edinboro who a held 38-34 advantage at the half.
 
Out of the halftime break, Edinboro extended the lead back to double figures, before a Lock Haven run cut the gap to four with 5:54 remaining in the half. Lock Haven knotted the game up at 60-60 with 3:47 to play in regulation to setup an exciting finish.
 
The Bald Eagles took a slender lead into the final minute, but the Fighting Scots wouldn't go away as they knotted the game up with a Kierell Green layup with 9.1 seconds left to force overtime. In the extra session, Edinboro built a five-point lead before Lock Haven surged back over the final 1:15. Washington picked up a rebound in the lane, scored the layup and drew the foul to head to the line with a chance to regain the lead. Washington converted to put the Crimson and White ahead by an 81-80 tally with 24 seconds left.
 
Following a missed Edinboro jumper, Washington picked up the rebound and was fouled to head back to the line. The East Petersburg, Pa. native converted both shots to build an 83-80 lead, which held to the final whistle.
 
Dymir Montague (Philadelphia/Neumann-Goretti) led five Lock Haven scorers in double figures with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Washington and Jesse McPherson (Philadelphia/Archbishop Carrol) ended the evening with 15 points each.
 
DaQuan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) notched 14 points including two critical three-pointers late in the second half and overtime periods. MarkAnthony Fidelis (Largo, Md./DeMatha) rounded out the Bald Eagles in double-figures with 11. The Bald Eagles were strong from the floor and posted a 44.8 percent mark.
 
Lock Haven also held a slight 45-43 advantage on the glass.

The Bald Eagles wrap up a two-game weekend in Thomas Fieldhouse on Saturday evening when they play host to third-ranked Mercyhurst in a PSAC cross-division matchup. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
