LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team is set to open its season on the road Wednesday, March 10, as the team is set to play nationally-ranked -No. 22- West Chester in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division play.

Wednesday's game-one will start at 1 p.m. and be the first in a conference doubleheader on Wednesday. Please note there will be no spectators allowed at either game. Action against West Chester was originally scheduled for March 5 and March 6, but was postponed because of unplayable field conditions.

Wednesday's games will mark the first two of sixteen scheduled away games. The schedule has a different look this year, as Lock Haven will only play other PSAC Eastern Division opponents during the regular season. The slate consists of Friday-Saturday four-game series with home-and-home doubleheaders on each day. The season will culminate with the currently scheduled May 5 start of the PSAC Championship tournament. The winner of the PSAC tournament will advance to the NCAA tournament.

On Friday (March 12), LHU will travel to Kutztown to start a series with the Golden Bears. Following doubleheader action, the Bald Eagles will return to Lock Haven for the first scheduled home competitions on March 13 in the second doubleheader against Kutztown.

Head coach Kelly Shannon is narrowing in on her 300th win as a head coach at Lock Haven University. Shannon has totaled 281 wins during her time at Lock Haven, and she has a strong team behind her to make a push towards 300.

Leading the Bald Eagles this season will be veterans Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) and Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./Spring Brook). Ruppert had a hot start to the shortened 2020 season in the batter's box. The outfielder led the way with a .392 batting average and took advantage of six stolen bases on seven attempts. The duo of Mathes and Carpenter have started a combined 279 games for LHU and will use their wisdom to guide a young squad featuring nine freshmen on the field this season.

Sophomore-standout Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) will look to pick up where she left off during her freshman campaign. In 2020, the standout recorded a dominant 6-3 win-loss record and a 3.23 ERA over 52 innings pitched. She will look to take on a bigger role this season and will aim to become the fixture in the Bald Eagles pitching rotation.

Back on February 12, the Bald Eagles were picked fifth in the PSAC East despite winning the PSAC Championship in 2019. West Chester received six first-place votes and was picked by the coaches as the favorite in the East. Kutztown received three first-place votes and checked in at No. 2.. Bloomsburg, Shippensburg and Lock Haven rounded out the top five.

In the Western Division, Gannon was selected as the team to beat, while Seton Hill and IUP rounded out the top 3.
