Softball drops doubleheader with Shepherd

LHU softball fell in Friday afternoon’s doubleheader with Shepherd, but looks to rebound in the final two games at home on Saturday (April 17).

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. – The Lock Haven University softball team (8-14, 8-14 PSAC East) fell to Shepherd University (23-8, 19-7 PSAC East), 8-4, and, 9-1, Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East division action.

Despite the result, Riley McClellan (Granvillesummit, Pa./ Troy) put in a tremendous day at the plate going 5-5 with two RBIs, drawing two walks, stealing two bases and notching one double.

Game 1: L, 8-4

LHU took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning when Kierston Long (Sunbury, Pa./ Shikellamy) drew a bases loaded walk which scored Haley Lestician (Lawrenceville, N.J./ Lawrence) who had reached earlier in the inning after a fielder's choice. The Rams struck right back scoring four runs in the first inning and two runs in the second to build a 6-1 advantage. Long drove in her second run of the day on a single to right field in the fifth inning as The Haven dug into the lead. McClellan cut the lead to 8-4 in the sixth inning with a two run shot as she continued her hot run at the plate. The Rams held onto their advantage and closed game one at 8-4.

Kinley Gioglio (Stroudsburg, Pa./ Stroudsburg) put together a strong relief showing for the Bald Eagles pitching 4 2/3 innings without an earned run. Gioglio struck out two batters without walking a Ram player and allowed just two hits.

Game 2: L, 9-1 (5 Inn.)
Shepherd early and often in the opening three innings had built up a 6-0 lead at the end of the third. Lestician rounded off an impressive day with two more hits including an RBI single in the fifth inning, which was the Bald Eagles lone run in game two. The freshman knocked in three RBIs on the day and collected three hits across the doubleheader. The Rams drove in three more in the bottom of the fifth inning to push the final to 9-1.
