Softball celebrates Senior Day, caps season at home

The LHU softball team celebrated Senior Day today (May 2) at home and capped its regular season in PSAC East action.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (10-22, 10-22 PSAC E) played host to local-rival Bloomsburg (17-17, 15-17 PSAC E) for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East matchup today.

Prior to today's contest, the Bald Eagles honored their four graduating seniors: Sara Gsell (Waynesboro, Pa./ Waynesboro), Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./ Hammonton), Stefanie O'Grady (Milford, Pa./ Delaware Valley) and Casey Carpenter (Springbrook, Pa./ North Pocono).

Lock Haven and Bloomsburg finished up their four-game series today and the Huskies took both games 4-1 and 12-1 (5 Inn.), respectively. Today's home-doubleheader closed the 2021 season for LHU.

Game 1: L, 4-1
Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./ Tamaqua) took the starting role in the circle for the Bald Eagles. In relief, Kinley Gioglio (Stroudsburg, Pa./ Stroudsburg) took over for Schellhammer in the third and proceeded to pitch 4 2/3 shut-out innings. She did not allow any extra base hits and ultimately kept Lock Haven in contention for the rest of the outing.

Lock Haven went down four after three, but in the bottom of the fourth Haley Lestician (Lawrenceville, N.J./ Lawrence) led a recovery effort and crushed a line drive over the left-center field fence. Her solo homerun moved the score to 4-1.

In the end the Bald Eagles could not overcome the deficit and fell to the Huskies 4-1.

Game 2: L, 12-1
Bloomsburg jumped out to an early lead over Lock Haven scoring five runs through the first three innings. The Huskies tacked on seven more through the final two frames to take the contest.

In the fourth inning, Lestician broke up the Bloomsburg no-hitter and found second base again after another line drive was narrowly kept in play by the right-center field fence. Amanda Criss (Bel Air, Md./ Bel Air) would then bring Lestician home with an RBI groundout.

Mathes and O'Grady each collected one hit apiece in game two.
