LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women's wrestling team (4-1) picked up a 40-5 win over No. 15 Sacred Heart University behind four pins. The Bald Eagles followed up the dominating win with another stellar victory at Thomas Fieldhouse over Delaware Valley 38-6, as head coach Ronnie Perry and the Bald Eagles continued their four-match win streak.
Dual No. 1: Lock Haven 40, Sacred Heart 5
The Bald Eagles picked up forfeit wins on the opening four bouts of the match to move to a 20-0 lead.
Lily Sherer got the action started with a quick pin at 131. From the whistle, Sherer controlled the action and she rolled to the decisive pin in just 27 seconds. Her win over Ayeska Zanetti marked her fourth pin on the year.
Madison Matta (Blue Ridge, Pa./Waynesboro) continued her dominance on the mat. She dominated Savannah Vanase at 136, before picking up the fall to push the LHU advantage to 30-0. Matta took control early and led 2-0 before a second period takedown turned into a pin for the Bald Eagle. Matta improved on her already impressive season, stretching her record to 8-1 behind seven pins.
Following an LHU forfeit at 143 pounds, Lock Haven's No. 8 ranked Jessica Johnson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) squared off against Sacred Heart's Madison Sandquist, ranked No. 7 at 143, at 155 pounds. In the matchup of the day, Johnson scored four quick points off of a takedown and an exposure. Sandquist fired back with two quick takedowns of her own and nearly had the pin, but Johnson fought off the attack for a minute straight with her shoulder behind her neck to make it to the second period.
The excitement continued into the second period as the pair traded takedowns. Sandquist picked up another exposure before Johnson was able to slip her way out of another attack. The Bald Eagle then converted a takedown into a last minute pin, keeping her undefeated season alive.
In the final bout at 191, Lacey Hums kept the thunder rolling in Thomas Fieldhouse as she usurped Sacred Heart's Jacklyn Smith by way of pin. In an electric turn of events, Hums recovered from an early takedown and exposure to score a pin and bring the match final to 40-5.
Lock Haven turned in a season-high 40 points behind four pins.
