HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – During the holiday break, the nationally-ranked Lock Haven University women's wrestling team added the Midlands Tournament to the competition schedule and a pair of Bald Eagles stood out at the prestigious mid-season event.
The women's competition was held on Friday, Dec. 30, and both
Kaelani Shufeldt (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) and
Grace Stem (Snow Shoe, Pa./Bald Eagle) placed among the top three.
Victoria Smith (El Centro, Calif./Brawley Union) also hit the mats and competed for Lock Haven as a limited number of Haven wrestlers competed event, which was added during Lock Haven's mid-year semester and holiday break.
Shufeldt was second at 109 and Stem placed third at 143. Smith represented the Bald Eagles and went 0-2 at 123.
Shufelft topped Angelina Graff (North Central) and Kendra Ryan (North Central) by an identical score of 10-8 to earn a spot in the finals. In the finals, Shufelft fell to North Central's Sydney Petzinger (TF, 11-0) and the Bald Eagle finished 2-1 overall on the day.
Stem opened the tournament with a loss to Grand View's Alexis Gomes (TF, 14-2), but the Bald Eagle bounced back in a big way. Stem topped Katie Lange (Augsburg) 9-0 and downed Riley Aamold (North Central) by tech fall (10-0) for third. Stem was 2-1 on the day.
Lock Haven will return to action on Friday, Jan. 6 at the 2022-23 National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championship.
