Wrestling rolls past Cleveland State, 32-6

Bald Eagles cruised past the visiting Vikings in front of the Crimson and White faithful.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – In front of a Senior Night crowd in Thomas Fieldhouse, the Lock Haven University (9-5, 5-1 MAC) wrestling team won eight bouts, including four with bonus points in a dominating 32-6 victory over visiting Cleveland State University (7-8, 4-4 MAC) in Mid-American Conference (MAC) action on Friday evening.

The win for the Bald Eagles was their sixth in a row in dual meet action and puts the finishing touches on an unbeaten regular season in MAC action inside Thomas Fieldhouse. Lock Haven's win also wraps up the MAC East division regular season dual meet championship.

Before the match, Lock Haven honored their five seniors: Luke Werner, Ben Barton, Parker McClellan, Brinton Simington and Cole Manley.

Lock Haven got the evening started off on another strong note as the 22nd-ranked Anthony Noto (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima (NC State)) picked up a convincing 21-5 triumph via tech fall at 125 pounds. Noto tallied four first-period takedowns and seven overall in the bout to roll to his 22nd win in a row.

After a tough loss at 133 pounds, the Bald Eagles rattled off seven wins in a row to secure the dual meet victory starting with another bonus point victory at 141 pounds.

Tyler Dilley (Saint Mary's, Pa./Saint Mary's) posted a first-period takedown and four near-fall points to run out to a 6-0 lead after the first period. Dilley added to his lead with a takedown in each of the final two periods and finalized an 11-1 major decision victory behind a 3:10 riding time advantage as the Bald Eagles opened up a 9-2 lead.

At 149 pounds, Connor Eck (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) kept things rolling with an 8-2 decision win. Eck led 4-2 after two periods and blew the bout wide open with four near-fall points in the closing period to finish off an 8-2 win and extended the LHU lead to 12-2.

Lock Haven notched its third bonus-point win of the evening with behind a resounding triumph from the efforts of Ben Barton (Louisville, Ky./Trinity (Campbell)) at 157 pounds. Barton, the 31st-ranked wrestler in the nation, stormed out to a 6-1 lead after period one and added a reversal, two takedowns and four near-fall points in the second period before rolling to a 19-3 tech fall victory. The Haven led by a 17-2 margin at the halftime break of the match.

Out of the intermission, 27th-ranked Ashton Eyler (Millersburg, Ohio/Claymont High (Iowa Central CC)) kept things rolling with a hard-fought 10-3 victory at 165 pounds. Eyler led by a 3-2 margin after the first period before adding an escape point in the second period. In the final frame, Eyler added two takedowns and four near-fall points to push the Lock Haven lead to 20-2 with four bouts remaining. With the win, Eyler ran his unbeaten streak to 17 matches.

Tyler Stoltzfus (Mifflinburg, Pa./Saint Joseph's Academy) put any ideas of a Cleveland State comeback out of the minds of Vikings fans with a fall at the 5:45 mark of the bout at 174 pounds. Stoltzfus led by an 11-4 margin before a third-period tilt showed the lights to his opponent and secured the match victory for the Bald Eagles.

Lock Haven's six-bout winning streak was capped off with a hard-fought 3-2 decision victory from the efforts of Colin Fegley (Mahanoy, Pa./Mahanoy) at 184 pounds. Following a scoreless first period, Fegley broke the deadlock with an escape in the second period to take a 1-0 lead after five minutes of action. Fegley surrendered an escape in the third period and the bout looked like it was headed to sudden victory before the Mahoney, Pa. native scored a late takedown to finalize a 3-2 win.

Cleveland State picked up its second win of the evening at 197 pounds, but Isaac Reid (Saltsburg, Pa./Kiski) wrapped up the dual with a 5-3 win at 285 pounds. Reid broke a 2-2 deadlock with a second-period takedown and added a third-period escape to pick up his 11th win in a row behind a 5-3 triumph. With the win at 285 pounds, Lock Haven wrapped up a convincing 32-6 MAC victory in the regular season home finale.
