Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball opens season at No. 13 Mount Olive

The LHU baseball team started their 2022 season as the Bald Eagles visited Mount Olive.

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Lock Haven University baseball (0-2) faced No. 13 University of Mount Olive (2-0) as the Bald Eagles dropped the doubleheader but kept it close with the nationally ranked Trojans.

GAME 1 - Mount Olive 10, Lock Haven 7

Lock Haven struck first with Jake Mastillo (Roaring Brook Twp, Pa./North Pocono) hitting a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead. Mastillo brought the power as he would connect on another home run, finishing with three RBI and a walk.

Mount Olive posted four runs in the fifth inning to break open a one-run lead and take an 8-3 advantage into the latter innings of play, but the Bald Eagles would make the game interesting.

In the seventh, Justin Lichtenwalner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) gave LHU another run when he pushed home Camden Moors (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont) on a fielder's choice groundout. Zach Kaatz (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) tallied two RBI with a double in the eighth, driving in Blaise Zeiders (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) and Joe Shannon (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent (Mercer CC)) to make it 8-6, but it was not enough to catch the Trojans.

The Bald Eagles had four players with multi-hit performances as the team collected five extra-base hits. The pitching staff limited the Trojans to just seven hits, striking out seven, as well as stranding seven runners.

GAME 2 - Mount Olive 14, Lock Haven 7

Game two saw a similar start to that of game one as it was the Bald Eagles getting on the board first. Shannon hit a sacrifice fly, which scored Gavin Troutman (Boyertown, Pa./Oley Valley) to start the scoring. Troutman would also double the next inning, bringing in Garrett Nepert (Preston, Md./Colonel Richardson (Chesapeake County CC)) to bring the score to a 2-2 deadlock.

Mount Olive would take control of the game, pushing the score to 7-2, with a three-run fourth inning. With Nick White (Halethorpe, Md./Lansdowne (CCBC Dundalk)) and Lichtenwalner on base in the top half of the fifth, Mastillo went deep with his third home run of the day, putting LHU back into the game. Mastillo's final blast was a three-run shot giving him six RBI on the day.

The Trojans would put seven more runs on the scoreboard to close out the doubleheader, but the Bald Eagles would once again out hit their opponents with 12 hits.
