Third-inning explosion pushes Softball past Concordia at PFX Tournament

The LHU softball team racked up eight runs in the third inning and downed Concordia St. Paul on Sunday in PFX Tournament action.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Lock Haven University softball team (3-4) picked up a convincing 9-3 win over Concordia St. Paul (12-3-1) on Sunday evening at the PFX Tournament in Winter Haven, Florida.

Summer Peters (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning when she singled to center field to bring home Riley McClellan (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) and give LHU the early 1-0 advantage.

Concordia took the lead 2-1 in their half of the third inning, but LHU exploded for eight runs to push ahead to the decisive lead.

Delaney Good (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) tied things up at 2-2 with an RBI single, and Peters notched her second RBI of the day to give LHU the 3-2 lead. Haley Lestician (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) also notched an RBI single before Megan Ryder (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) was driven in on a Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) fielder's choice RBI which put the Bald Eagles ahead 5-2.

A Concordia error brought in Bella Schmitt (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York), before Morgan Karasek (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) put the icing on the cake with a three-run homerun to left field. The offensive outburst handed the Bald Eagles a decisive 9-2 lead, and LHU cruised home for the win.

The Golden Bears grabbed a run back in the sixth, but were held in check by Madison Waltman (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) who worked a complete game and picked up the 9-3 win. Waltman fanned 11 batters and allowed just six hits.

Good and Peters paced LHU with two hits apiece, while Karasek's three-run shot edged out a two-RBI day from Peters.
