WREST: Noto’s sudden victory triumph highlights opening session for Bald Eagles

The Bald Eagles opened the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, and saw redshirt-freshman Anthony Noto earn a victory in a thriller.

DETROIT, Mich. – Five Lock Haven University wrestlers were in action today at the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Detroit, Michigan, and the Bald Eagles picked up a thrilling win from their 125-pounder to highlight the opening session.

Anthony Noto (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima (NC State)), the 17th-seeded wrestler at 125 pounds, secured the Bald Eagles lone win of the opening session with an electric sudden victory triumph over Penn State's Drew Hildebrandt. The redshirt-freshman was locked into a 2-2 battle with Hildebrandt, before chasing a takedown on the edge of the mat to secure a thrilling 4-2 victory in the extra session.

For Noto it marks his 29th win in a row, and he'll be back in action against top-seeded Nick Suriano of Michigan in the evening session with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.

No. 26 seed Ben Barton (Louisville, Ky./Trinity (Campbell)) fell in a tight rematch with No. 7 Josh Humphreys of Lehigh University by a 3-0 tally. The bout was a rematch of their December 4th meeting in Thomas Fieldhouse which saw Barton fall via pin to the nationally-ranked Mountain Hawk. Barton will square off with Markus Hartman of Army West-Point in wrestle-backs.

Isaac Reid (Saltsburg, Pa./Kiski), the 25th-seeded wrestling at 285 pounds, saw the No. 8 seed Matt Stencel of Central Michigan in a rematch of the Mid-American Conference finals at 285. Reid dropped the match 8-2, and will face Sam Schuyler of Iowa State in tonight's wrestle-backs.

Ashton Eyler (Millersburg, Ohio/Claymont High (Iowa Central CC)), seeded 26th at 165 pounds, and DaShawn Farber (Bethlehem, Pa./Nazareth High School), the 33rd-seeded 149-pounder, both dropped their respective matches by fall in the afternoon session, and now turn their focus to tonight's wrestle-backs. Eyler will meet Lucas Revano of Penn and Farber squares off with Marshall Keller of Princeton.
