Softball falls in twin bill at Shepherd

The LHU softball fell in Friday’s softball action against the Rams

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – The Lock Haven University softball team (11-14, 2-6 PSAC East) dropped both halves of an afternoon Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) road doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Shepherd University (12-14, 5-3 PSAC East).

Game 1: L, 7-0

Game one was tight throughout the contest before Shepherd opened the game up with a five-run, fifth inning.

The host Rams tagged a run on the board in the first to take the early lead and kept the LHU bats quiet before erupting for five runs in the fifth. Shepherd used a bases-clearing double and a two-run homer to run out to a 6-0 lead after five innings of play.

In the sixth, Shepherd added an insurance run to take a 7-0 advantage which is how game one ended.

Delaney Good (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) led the Lock Haven offense in the opener with a 2-for-3 outing.

Shepherd's Katie Laing secured the win for the hosts. Laing tossed a four-hit, complete-game shutout to pick up her sixth victory of the season.

Game 2: L, 6-3

In the nightcap, Lock Haven fell behind early before scrapping back in the middle innings, but couldn't overcome the early deficit in a 6-3 loss.

Shepherd took advantage of a pair of Lock Haven fielding miscues in the first inning to run out to a 4-0 lead.

In the second inning, the Rams once again converted on a pair of LHU errors to plate a pair of runs and extend their lead to 6-0 after two innings of action.

Lock Haven responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Back-to-back walks opened the inning before a Sydney Arrigale (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) fielder's choice plated Karasek to cut the gap to 6-1.

Haley Lestician (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) kept things going for the Bald Eagles with a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the Shepherd lead to 6-2 after three-and-a-half innings of play.

Following a trio of scoreless frames, Lock Haven got back on the board in the sixth. Summer Peters (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) belted a two-double down the line in left field and scored on a Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) infield single to trim the gap to 6-3.

Neither team threatened over the remainder of the contest as Shepherd held on for a 6-3 victory.

Peters and Ruppert led the way for the Lock Haven attack with mirroring 2-for-3 efforts.
