KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Lock Haven women's basketball team (11-17, 9-13 PSAC) capped their season in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) First Round on the road against Kutztown University (15-14, 12-10 PSAC), but the hosts edged out the Bald Eagles late for the 68-60 win.
For head coach
Jennifer Smith and the Bald Eagles, it capped a fourth-straight appearance in the conference postseason.
The No. 6 seed Bald Eagles and No. 3 seeded Golden Bears traded buckets and the lead for most of the first quarter, but Kutztown pulled away slightly at 17-10, before an
Adaliz Corbin (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) buzzer-beater cut the lead to 17-13.
After a quick 6-0 run from the Golden Bears to start the second quarter, LHU responded with a run of their own to tie things up once more at 23-23. Kutztown, however, ended the half on a 14-3 run to take a 37-26 lead into halftime.
An even third quarter saw the two sides heading into the fourth with the Golden Bears leading 49-42. Right out of the gate, the Bald Eagles cut the lead to one possession at 49-47, and the game was perfectly poised for an entertaining finish.
With under a minute to play, a
Brooke Lawyer (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) cut the Golden Bear's lead to 60-57, but strong free throw shooting helped Kutztown bring home the 68-60 win and head to the quarterfinals against Shippensburg.
Lawyer led all scorers on the night, and notched 15 points including 3-8 from beyond the arc. Joining Lawyer in double figures was
Jenadia Jordan (Lititz, Pa./Linden Hall) who chipped in 12.
Jackie Fetsko (Marion Center, Pa./Marion Center) led The Haven on the glass with seven, as the two sides were deadlocked at 36-36. Fetsko also added eight points as did
Taylor Leidy (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley).
Freshman
Alana Robinson (Rockaway, N.J./Pope John Paul II) closed her record-breaking season with another block and set the new LHU single-season mark to beat at 53.
