Lacrosse Celebrates Seniors in 2023 Season-Finale

Bald Eagles honor senior class before PSAC West clash with IUP; Haven edged out in thriller

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven lacrosse team (6-11, 4-8 PSAC West) closed the 2023 regular season today at home vs. Indiana (Pa.) University (12-5, 10-2 PSAC West) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action. The Bald Eagles were edged out in a thriller as the Crimson Hawkes escaped the 26-goal thriller with a narrow, 14-12 win.

Prior to today's game, Lock Haven celebrated and honored the 2023 graduating senior class: Gracie Chaires (Darlington, Md./Harford Technical), Brianna Cook (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista Community), Alexa Staffu (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland), Shannen Roy (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), Casey Hibbard (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central), Elizabeth Newman (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) and Sydney Schramm (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville).

Abby Katrinak (Strongsville, Ohio/ Strongsville) led all goal-scorers with five goals on the day. She was nearly unstoppable on the offensive end and the five goals today helped run her season total to 38.

Josey Shaffer (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) scored twice, grabbed six draw controls, recorded five ground balls and added two caused turnovers in an all-around amazing effort. The six draws pushed her career total to the prestigious 100-marker.

Haven goalkeeper Dana Mirigliano (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) played 57-plus minutes and made 10 saves. She finished the season with 134 saves, the fifth-most ever for a single season.

Nadia Baskot (Damascus, Md./Damascus), Peyton Masters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), Gabby Gunnip (Jordan, N.Y./Jordan Elbridge), Kaitlyn Collins (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) and Ally Weaver (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) all scored for Lock Haven.

The senior-defensive core of Cook, Staffu, Roy and Newman led the way today for the Bald Eagles in the tight and thrilling season-ending clash.

IUP led 4-2 after the first quarter and the Crimson Hawks led 8-4 at halftime, but the Bald Eagles rallied in the second half.

IUP took a 13-10 lead with 3:33 left in the contest, but again, Lock Haven responded. Shaffer scored with 3:02 left, and less than a minute later, Weaver made it 13-12. Despite the surge, The Haven just couldn't find the equalizer late, and an IUP goal from Kathryn Burker with 1:42 left proved to be an important insurance strike.

With today's result in hand, Lock Haven finished the 2023 season with a 6-11 overall record and the Bald Eagles went 4-8 in PSAC West play. As always, some of The Haven's best play came at home on Charlotte Smith Field. The Bald Eagles went 5-3 at home during the regular season and overall, Lock Haven won two of its final four games during the regular season.
