Tennis set to open 2023-24 season

The Lock Haven women’s tennis team will open the 2023-24 season at home Friday vs. Lycoming.

9/7/2023 10:04:00 AM

The Lock Haven tennis team is set to open the fall portion of the 2023-24 season Friday, Sept. 8 with a home match vs. Lycoming. The match is set for a 4 p.m. start.

The fall portion of the schedule features five events including the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) singles and doubles championships, scheduled for Oct. 7-9 at Bloomsburg.

Please Note: Lock Haven was originally scheduled to also host Penn College on Saturday, Sept. 9, but that match has been postponed with hopes of rescheduling later this fall. The current and most up-to-date schedule is available at GoLHU.com.

To date, Lock Haven will play four duals this fall including three at home. Last season, the Bald Eagles dominated on the home court and picked up four of their eight total dual-match wins at home. The Haven was 4-1 last season on the home courts.

For head coach Pete Wert, the 2023-24 season will mark his first full year as the head coach at The Haven. He was hired on January 19, 2023 and guided the Bald Eagles through a very successful spring 2023 season.

During spring 2023 competition, Lock Haven went 4-4 with PSAC East wins over Shepherd, East Stroudsburg, Shippensburg, along with a win over PSAC West foe Clarion. Following the 2023-24 season, Maddy Reeves was named to the All-Conference Team, the Bald Eagles' first All-Conference selection in school history.

Leading the way this fall will be experienced returners Mia Shuler, Olivia Anastos, Mary Kathryn Hillman, Christy McLean and Olivia Sharp. The roster also features a talented cast of newcomers, all of whom are looking to make an immediate impact on the lineup.

The 2023-24 roster certainly has a local flair and includes four Lock Haven natives including Anastos, Natalie Brown, Emma Harry and Claire Long. The local connection does not stop there as roster features Williamsport natives – Hillman and Shuler, along with Montoursville native Alaina Marchioni.

Following the season-opener Friday, the Bald Eagles will return to action during Homecoming Weekend when they host Clarion on Sunday, Sept. 24.

Lock Haven's only road match of the fall is set for Sept. 30 at Scranton and the Bald Eagles will cap the fall dual schedule at home on Oct. 1 vs. Penn State Altoona. The Haven will cap fall play at the aforementioned PSAC championships.
