Lacrosse improves to 6-0, opens PSAC West play with victory at Mercyhurst

The Bald Eagles went into Mercyhurst on Wednesday afternoon and left with a victory to extend their winning streak to six games this season.

ERIE, Pa. – The Lock Haven lacrosse team (6-0, 1-0 PSAC West) continued its red-hot start to the 2024 season by winning its sixth game in a row by downing Mercyhurst (1-4, 0-1 PSAC West) on the road, 13-7, in the Bald Eagles Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division opener on Wednesday (March 20).

With the win, Lock Haven improved to a perfect 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in the PSAC West.

The 6-0 start is the first since 2016 as the Bald Eagles have outscored the opposition 76-56 through the first six games – all victories.

The Haven has scored in double figures in every game this season and has matched its win total from last season.

After a 2-2 first period, The Haven erupted for six scores in the third and outscored Mercyhurst, 6-3, in the 15 minutes to lead 10-5 heading into the fourth period.

The Haven continued to find the back of the net in the final period and outscored the Lakes, 3-2, to secure a 13-7 victory on the road.

Gabby Gunnip (Elbridge, N.Y./Jordan Elbridge) moved into second in the PSAC for goals scored as she found the back of the net a team-high five times, improving her season-total to 20. Gunnip totaled six points as she also dished out an assist.

Makayla Kelly (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) recorded a hat trick with three goals for the second time this season. Emma Williams (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Nadia Baskot (Damascus, Md./Damascus) each scored twice, while six different Bald Eagles dished out assists.

Maddy Lapiana (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Farmingdale) led the defense with three caused turnovers and a ground ball.

Dana Mirigliano (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) earned her sixth goalkeeping victory of the season as she made 11 saves.

Notably, Lock Haven led 13-9 in draw controls behind a game-high seven from Josey Shaffer (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley).
