Softball drops PSAC East doubleheader at Shepherd

The Bald Eagles returned to action on Friday afternoon by visiting PSAC East foe Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Lock Haven softball team fell to Shepherd 6-0 and 9-7 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
 
Lock Haven moved to 9-11 overall and 3-7 in the PSAC East. Shepherd improved to 10-10 on the season and 6-2 in conference play.
 
Game 1 Recap:
In game one, Shepherd shutout the Bald Eagles offense and used a four-run third inning and two-run fifth to earn the victory.
 
For Lock Haven, Madison Melius went 2-for-3 and Blaire Balestrini doubled to lead the way.
 
Abby Robertson and Keri Wesneski combined for the six innings on the mound, while Robertson struck out two hitters.  
 
Game 2 Recap:
In the nightcap, the Bald Eagles took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, behind RBIs from Melius and Maria Fratangelo, but Shepherd responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
 
The Haven regained the lead at 5-4 after scoring three runs over the third and fourth innings thanks to RBIs from Melius, Balestrini and Maci Brodzina.
 
However, Shepherd rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fourth and three runs in the fifth to go back on top 9-5.
 
Fratangelo tripled in the top of the seventh to plate two runs to cut Lock Haven's deficit to 9-7, but the Rams closed out the rest of the inning to earn the sweep.
 
Fratangelo (3B) and Melius (2B) combined for five RBIs, while Brodzina (3-for-4) and Balestrini (2-for-4) also drove in runs.
Up next for The Haven:
The Bald Eagles remain on the road and will visit No. 16 Kutztown tomorrow afternoon (Saturday, March 29) for a PSAC East doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
