Men’s Basketball edged by visiting Shepherd

The Bald Eagles hosted Shepherd in a PSAC East battle on Saturday afternoon

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven men's basketball team could not withstand a hot-shooting second half from Shepherd, as the Bald Eagles fell 78-73 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East play on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Fieldhouse.

With the result, Lock Haven moves to 7-13 overall and 3-10 in the East, while Shepherd improves to 12-8 on the season and 8-5 in the conference.

Dyllon Scott paced Lock Haven with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, and went 4-of-6 at the free throw line. Dean Coleman-Newsome and Blake Deegan joined him in double figures with 17 points apiece, while Keith Warren added 15 points, three assists and two steals.

Lock Haven led 33-31 at halftime after shooting 42 percent from the field and holding Shepherd to 20 percent from 3-point range over the opening 20 minutes. The game featured eight ties and 13 lead changes, and the Bald Eagles matched the Rams with 36 points in the paint while also owning a 10-7 edge in fast-break points.

In the second half, Shepherd caught fire, shooting 65 percent from the floor and 64 percent from 3-point range to flip the game. Marcus Banks poured in a game-high 24 points and went 8-of-12 at the line, and Favor Okigweh posted a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds for the visitors.

After the break, Coleman-Newsome opened the half with a jumper to push the Lock Haven lead to 35-31, but Shepherd answered with a 10-2 burst to go up 41-40 at the 16:19 mark. The Rams gradually stretched the margin to 59-51 with 10:30 to play behind back-to-back 3-pointers, and later led by as many as 11 at 70-59 with 2:54 remaining.

Lock Haven refused to go away and used a late surge to climb back within one possession. Scott buried a 3-pointer to trim the deficit to 71-65, and a Coleman-Newsome jumper made it 71-67 with 1:30 left. The Bald Eagles had multiple defensive stops down the stretch, but Shepherd sealed the contest at the line, going 6-of-6 at the stripe in the final 30 seconds.

The Bald Eagles totaled 13 points off turnovers and 10 second-chance points, but Shepherd's 55 percent overall shooting and 43 percent mark from 3-point range proved to be the difference.
