Volleyball's rally comes up short against Kutztown

MERTZTOWN, PA - Lock Haven's (15-6, 7-2 PSAC) seven-match winning streak ended Friday night when the Bald Eagles were upended by a 3-1 score in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division women's volleyball showdown with Kutztown (20-6, 8-2 PSAC).

Kutztown took the opening set by a 25-21 score before the Bald Eagles ran away with set two by a 25-12 margin. The Bald Eagles scored the first four points of set two on the way to a lopsided set triumph. Natalie Acevedo's serving set the tone for the set. The senior notched three aces in a 4-0 start and finished with five in the match to mark a season high. Lock Haven led 22-9 before Kutztown scored again but the Bald Eagles closed out the set on a Payton Stanton kill to even the match at a set each.

The Golden Bears led by as many as five in the third set and had to hold off a fierce Lock Haven rally that tied it at 22-22. Miscues from the Bald Eagles down the stretch run of the third set made the difference as the Golden Bears took a 2-1 lead in the match.

Kutztown scored the first six points in the final set but the Bald Eagles didn't go away without a fight. Lock Haven pulled to within three points late in the set, but came up just short as the host Golden Bears took a 3-1 match victory.

Maddie Mitchell led Lock Haven with 15 kills on the evening, while Stanton and junior Gracelynn Wolzen had nine kills each. Freshman setter Natalie Gibson had 40 assists and 16 digs, while Olivia Taylor led all players on the evening with 21 digs.
