ERIE, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men's soccer team (4-1, 3-1 PSAC) found the back of the net five times today at PSAC rival Gannon University (3-4, 0-1 PSAC) and the Bald Eagles left Erie with an important 5-3 win.
With the win LHU improves to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in conference action, which has them atop the PSAC standings.
LHU is currently in a tie for first (nine points) with No. 20 Millersville.
Greg Shertzer (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) led LHU with two goals and one assist.
The Bald Eagles trend for a fast start continued as
Adam Supplee (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) put LHU up 1-0 just 57 seconds into the match. Shertzer set up Supplee's game-opening tally.
Lock Haven's attack continued to press and the hard work paid off as LHU led 3-0 less than 30 minutes into the contest.
Shertzer was the story as he scored in the 13th and 27th minutes of play.
Late in the first half, Gannon made it 3-1.
Less than four minutes into the second half
Martin Pletz (Pittsburgh/Carlynton) put LHU up 4-1.
The host Golden Knights didn't go away and made it 4-3 in the 70th minute.
Ben Weaver (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) made his first career goal a special one, adding an all-important insurance goal in the 85th minute to make it 5-3.
Weaver's goal came off an assist from Pletz.
Lock Haven's defensive effort was led by goalie
Chad Badorf (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), who made four saves.
The Bald Eagles will play in front of the home fans for the first time on Thursday (September 22) at 3 p.m. against Alderson-Broaddus.
