HAMPTON, Va. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (3-3) split two games today on the final day of the Builder Invitational. The Bald Eagles defeated Briarcliffe (0-5) 10-9 in 11 innings in game one, but fell to the Apprentice School (3-3) 6-4 in game two.
In game one against Briarcliffe, the Bald Eagles trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth. LHU rallied and with two outs and the tying run on second base,
Jose Diaz (Oak Ridge, N.J./Gloucester County College) smacked a game-tying two RBI single to right-center field to send the game to extra innings.
International tie-break rules were used, allowing each team to start each extra inning with a runner on second base.
Each team scored one run in the 10th inning and Briarcliffe was able to score twice in the top of the 11th to take the lead 9-7.
Once again, the Bald Eagles fought back led by Diaz. This time Diaz connected for an RBI double to right-center field to cut the Briarcliffe lead to 9-8.
A few batters later,
Austin Botts (Seven Valleys, Pa./Wingate University) drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game at 9-9.
LHU would win it with their next at-bat as
Ryan Watkins (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) hit a walk-off sacrifice fly that scored Diaz.
Diaz was 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Botts had a solid game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Brandon Renoll (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) got the start on the mound and struck out five in seven innings of work.
David Masteller (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) came in relief to throw four innings. He struck out three and picked up his second win of the weekend.
In game two, LHU fell to the Apprentice School 6-4.
Kyle Schubert (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) was the starting pitcher for LHU.
Schubert allowed just three earned runs on five hits and two walks in six strong innings. He picked up the no-decision.
Zach Rote (Swissdale, Pa./Central Mountain) took the loss as he pitched the final two innings of the game.
Rote struck out two hitters.
Eight different Bald Eagles recorded hits in the game.
Casey Hamilton (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central Martinsburg) had a RBI double for The Haven and
Brian Zysset (Williamsport Pa./Loyalsock Township) also doubled.
Dakota Roof (Towanda, Pa./Towanda),
Collin Mills (Union Bridge, M.d./Francis Scott Key) and
Josh Jones (Neelyton, Pa./Southern-Huntingdon) also drove in runs for The Haven.
Ryan Henritzy (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) went 2-for-5 to lead LHU.
The Bald Eagles are back in action Friday, March 2 when they travel to Shepherdstown, West Virginia to compete in the Shepherd Tournament (Mar. 2-4). LHU opens the tournament against host Shepherd at 12 p.m.
