LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The No. 6 Lock Haven University lacrosse team is set for the 2013 NCAA Division II Lacrosse Championships.
The 2013 tournament opens on Saturday, May 11 when the Lady Eagles travel to Winter Park, Fla. to take on No. 3 Rollins College in a Quarterfinal matchup.
The Lady Eagles enter the tournament 15-2 overall and are ranked No. 3 in the South Region. Rollins enters the weekend 15-1 overall and are ranked No. 2 in the South Region.
LHU will be making its sixth NCAA appearance in school history and its fourth in the last five seasons.
Lock Haven last played in NCAA action in 2011 when The Haven fell to West Chester in the quarterfinals.
Prior to 2011, LHU reached the Final Four in 2010 and reached the National Championship game in 2010.
The Lady Eagles are 1-1 all-time against Rollins. LHU defeated Rollins in 2011, 12-7, but Rollins took last year's early-season matchup, 18-10.
When scouting the Lady Eagles it's tough to point out just one-strength to their success. Lock Haven is outscoring its opponents 244-110, while averaging just under 15 goals a game.
When you combine that explosive-attack with tough defense and sensational goaltending, Lock Haven becomes a major threat to win the title this weekend.
Lock Haven's offense is paced by the play of junior
Chelsea Borrino (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas), who led the PSAC this season in assists per game. She has 78 points on the year, including 62 assists.
One of her main passing targets is
Jessica Pandolf (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North), who led the PSAC in goals per game this year. She has 62 on the year.
Borrino and Pandolf both were First Team All-PSAC and IWLCA All-Region selections.
Defensively, the Lady Eagles unit has been dominant top to bottom.
Jenna Dingler (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township),
Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton, Pa./Souderton),
Melinda Wojt (Telford, Pa./Souderton) and
Christina Hawkins (Harvre de Grace, Md./Harve de Grace) have been brilliant throughout the year for LHU.
Lock Haven is led in goal by redshirt-freshman goalie
Chrissy Baffuto (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central), who is 15-2 on the year and has posted a .485 save-percentage and 96 saves on the year.
Hawkins and Baffuto both were Second Team All-PSAC and IWLCA All-Region selections.
Wojt and
Rachel Ward (Fishers, Ind./Bishop Chatard) earned Third team All-PSAC honors.
The winner of Saturday's Quarterfinal matchup will earn a trip to the Final Four on Saturday, May 18 in Owings Mills, Md.
