Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Valentine’s goal holds as LHU beats Penn State for first time in 30 years

Rachel Valentine scored in the 16th minute and the Bald Eagle defense played tough as the LHU field hockey team beat Penn State, 1-0.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Leading scorer Rachel Valentine (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) scored in the 16th minute and the Bald Eagles defense held strong as the Lock Haven University field hockey team beat perennial power Penn State, 1-0 for the first time in 30 years.

The win was the sixth straight for Lock Haven (13-2) and marked LHU's first win over Penn State (5-8) since the 1985 season. Lock Haven and Penn State first played in 1954 and today marked the 43rd all-time meeting between the two local rivals.

Valentine put Lock Haven up, 1-0 in the 16th minute (15:05) on the game's first shot. The goal was her team-leading 12th of the season and came after she ripped down the right side of the field and flipped the ball far post one-handed.

From the moment LHU took the lead, the Bald Eagle defense tightened and played fantastic, thanks to the efforts of Colleen McCabe (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./William Tennent) and Stephanie Whiteman (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago/Bishop Anstey East), among others.

Haven goalkeeper Paige Stuppy (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) pitched the shutout, making three saves on the way to her ninth win of the season.

LHU returns to Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) action on Friday, October 16 at 3 p.m. on the road at Saint Francis (Pa.).
