Whiteman leads Lock Haven past Rider in double-OT thriller

Stephanie Whiteman’s penalty stroke in double-overtime sealed LHU’s tenth win of the season.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Stephanie Whiteman's (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent Port-of-Spain) overtime penalty stroke proved to be the deciding factor in the Lock Haven University field hockey team's win against Rider.

LHU improves to 10-2 while Rider falls to 7-3 on the season.

At 13:05 of the double overtime frame, Whiteman was tripped in the attacking arc and was granted a penalty stroke.  She lifted the ball inside the near post past the sprawling Rider goalkeeper Joelle Prettyman for her second goal of the season and to clinch the victory.

Both teams had opportunities in the two overtime periods, none better than Lock Haven's Lydia George (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) whose fast break shot was stopped by the pads of Prettyman in the first overtime frame.

Lock Haven got on the board first as Rachel Valentine (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) paced the LHU offense with six shots and the only goal of the first half at the 23:23 mark.  George forced a pass through the defense that was redirected by Valentine for her 10th goal of the 2015 season.

Rider would tie the game at the 40:05 mark of the second half with a goal from Jessica Randazzo.  Off of a penalty corner, Rider passed the ball in quick succession before Allison Baligian feathered the ball to Randazzo, who slipped it inside the far post for her second goal of the year.

Prettyman stopped eight LHU shots, falling to 6-2 on the year.  Maddie Wagenfeld (Ambler Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Paige Stuppy (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) shared time in the cage for Lock Haven.  Playing in the second half and both overtime frames, Stuppy made two saves and was credited with the victory, improving to 8-0 on the season.

Lock Haven will return to Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) action on Sunday at noon when the Bald Eagles host Davidson.
