The LHU field hockey team field hockey team picked up a historic win today, dropping perennial A-10 power Massachusetts for the first time in school history.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (12-2, 3-2 A-10) was dominate for 70 minutes and beat visiting Massachusetts (6-6, 2-2 A-10), 2-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) action.

The win marked Lock Haven first ever vs. UMass, the perennial A-10 power.

The Bald Eagles got goals from freshman Alyscia Smith (Newport, Pa./Newport) and leading-scorer Rachel Valentine (Souderton, Pa./Souderton), and the defense shut down any UMass attempt at an offensive attack.

Smith struck 12:57 into the contest, putting LHU up 1-0 after a tremendous individual effort to beat the UMass defense, before firing a shot to the far post.

Valentine scored her conference-best 11th goal of the year in the 38th minute as she knocked home a rebound for the 2-0 lead.

Massachusetts only managed four shots as the LHU's defense was strong, thanks to solid play from Colleen McCabe (Huntingdon, Valley, Pa./William Tennent) and Megan Wenrich (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Daulphin), among others.

Lock Haven will play host to Penn State on Sunday, October 11 at 1 p.m. in non-conference action.
