Bald Eagles hang on for thrilling win over 2nd place Kutztown, 84-82

Hepburn, Blount each score 19 to pace LHU, who pick up huge win for playoff picture

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Four Bald Eagles scored in double-figures tonight, as the Lock Haven University men's basketball team (7-15, 7-11 PSAC) picked up a huge win over Kutztown University (15-10, 12-7 PSAC), 84-82 at PSECU Court at Thomas Fieldhouse.
 
Kutztown entered the game in second place in the PSAC Eastern Division.
 
Four Bald Eagles scored in double-figures tonight led by Wali Hepburn (Philadelphia/Neumann-Goretti) and Al Blount (Northampton, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), who each scored 19 points.
 
Blount was huge for The Haven in the opening period, scoring 17 of his 19 points in the half, including three three-pointers.
 
Hepburn did his damage in the second half, scoring 16 points in the final 20 minutes of play.
 
Hepburn added six rebounds and tied a career-high with four blocks in the game.
 
Forwards Nate Walters (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) and Theo West (Philadelphia/Kensington) were solid down low with 15 points each.  West added six boards while Walters chipped in with five.
 
Bootsie Walker (Chester, Pa./Chester) scored nine points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for The Haven.
 
The Bald Eagles shot a blistering 55.9% (5-for-6) from three in the first half and LHU led by nine, 41-32 at the break.
 
Kutztown got off to a quick start in the second half, and trimmed LHU's lead almost immediately.


The two teams battled almost the entire second half, with neither team able to gain a significant advantage.  With the game tied at, 79-79 with 52 seconds remaining, West caught a great pass from a driving Walker and laid it in to give the Bald Eagles the lead, 81-79.
 
Although the final 45 seconds were tense, Lock Haven would never relinquish the lead again, as The Haven calmly sealed the game at the free throw line.
 
Howard Sellers led KU with 18 points off the bench.
 
The win keeps Lock Haven right in the playoff hunt in the Eastern Division, where the Bald Eagles currently sit in the sixth and final playoff spot.
 
LHU returns to action Saturday, February 14 when the Bald Eagles host Millersville in a crucial PSAC East matchup.  Tipoff from PSECU Court at Thomas Fieldhouse is set for 4 p.m.
