LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Behind a tremendous individual effort from
Stephanie Whiteman (Trincity, Trinidad and Tabago/Bishop Anstey East), the Lock Haven University field hockey team (1-0) opened the 2015 season tonight (Friday, Aug. 28) with a 3-0 victory over visiting William & Mary (0-1).
Whiteman scored on a penalty stroke late in the first half to put LHU up 1-0. Her first goal of the 2015 season came after she had already made three defensive saves to keep the game tied 0-0.
Whiteman's goal came in the 34
th minute and Lock Haven added two second-half tallies to take home the win.
Dana-Lee De Gannes (Maraval, Trinidad and Tabago/Maraval) put LHU up 2-0 in the 61
st minute when she deflected home a Whiteman shot.
Just 2:27 later it was 3-0 Lock Haven after
Rachel Valentine (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) knocked home a
Lydia George (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) pass.
Defensively, Preseason All-Conference pick
Megan Wenrich (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and
Colleen McCabe (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./William Tennent) led the charge for The Haven.
Goalkeeper
Maddie Wagenfeld (Ambler, Pa./Hatborok-Horsham) made pair of impressive saves in the victory.
Earlier this week (Tuesday, Aug. 25), LHU was picked third in the 2015 Atlantic 10 Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Last season, Lock Haven went 12-8 overall and 6-2 in A-10 play, qualifying for its second straight conference tournament.
Lock Haven returns to action on Sunday (August 30) at 11 a.m. when LHU hosts Ohio.
