Field Hockey moves to 2-0, drops Ohio 2-1

The LHU field hockey team moved to 2-0 on the young season today after earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory over visiting Ohio.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (2-0) moved to 2-0 on the season after earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory today (Sunday, Aug. 30) over visiting Ohio University (1-1).

Lock Haven got goals Colleen McCabe (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./William Tennent) and Rachel Valentine (Souderton, Pa./Souderton), and goalkeeper Paige Stuppy (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) made a big save in the game's final minutes to help LHU picked up its second win in three days.

McCabe opened the scoring with 2:13 left in the first half when she ripped home a penalty corner. Stephanie Whiteman (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago/Bishop Anstey East) and Valentine were credited with assists on the play.

Ohio tied the game minutes later - and with no time left on the clock in the first half - as Maria Russell knocked home a rebound on a penalty corner attempt. The two teams were tied 1-1 at the break.

Valentine scored her second goal of the season and put Lock Haven up 2-1 in the 56th minute when she redirected a hard McCabe pass into the circle.

Stuppy made two saves on the way to the victory including the one late in the game, which kept LHU in front.

Whiteman was again a leader on defense and recorded a defensive save in the first half. She already has four defensive saves through two games.

Jenna Felice (Endicott, N.Y./Maine Endwell) also stood out on defense for The Haven.

Lock Haven opened the 2015 season on Friday with a dominating 3-0 victory over visiting William and Mary.

Up next: LHU returns to action on Friday, September 4 at Cornell (5 p.m.) and travels to Townson on Sunday (September 6, noon).
