ERIE, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women's basketball team (3-3, 1-2 PSAC) defeated Gannon University (1-7, 1-2 PSAC) on the road in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest, 67-64.
The wins marks Lock Haven's first at Gannon since 1992 and snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Golden Knights.
The win was also the 100
th of head coach
Jennifer Smith's career. She entered the season with 73 wins at Lock Haven, the third-most in LHU women's basketball history. Smith picked up 24 wins at Goldey-Beacom as the head coach during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. She needs just six more wins to move into the No. 2 all-time spot on Lock Haven's women's basketball head-coach win list.
The Bald Eagles offense was led by
Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh (State College, Pa./State College),
Kayla Henderson (Philadelphia/Lackawanna College) and
Madison McHale (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) who finished the game with 17, 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Shelton-Burleigh, Henderson and McHale combined for 46 of LHU's 67 points.
With 1:04 left in the game and down by three, Henderson drove to the basket and laid it in to cut the Gannon lead to just one (Gannon, 62-21) .
After a missed Gannon jump shot with thirty seconds left
Lysa Mealing (Altoona, Pa.Altoona) grabbed one of her 13 rebounds and found Henderson, who finished with another layup giving LHU a one point lead (LHU, 63-62).
LHU was up by one with 15 seconds remaining Mealing was fouled and sent to the free-throw-line where she made both shots. Mealing was three of four from the line in the victory, leading the Bald Eagles to a 67-64 victory.
LHU is right back in action tomorrow (Sunday, December 4) at Clarion University (1 p.m.).
