KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women's basketball team got a historic outing from
Lysa Mealing (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) and the Bald Eagles played their best basketball when it counted the most on the way to an 80-67 overtime victory at Kutztown University tonight in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action.
With the game tied 58-58 at the end of regulation, Lock Haven (9-12, 6-11 PSAC) exploded in overtime and outscored Kutztown (8-12, 5-11 PSAC) 22-9 over the five-minute extra period.
The win was a crucial one for Lock Haven, who sits one spot ahead of Kutztown in the current PSAC East standings. The Golden Bears have one game in hand.
Mealing was nothing short of spectacular and finished with a monster double-double. She scored a team-high 19 points to go along with a 25 rebounds.
The 25-rebound effort breaks LHU's all-time single game record of 22 (Helen Woltman vs. Delaware St., 11/22/81). It's also ties Mealing for the fifth-most ever recorded in a single-game by any PSAC player. The PSAC single-game rebound record is 28 (Mansfield's Deb Gmys, 1988-89).
Mealing had more than half of Lock Haven's 48 rebounds tonight as they out-rebounded Kutztown 48-40.
Mealing was one five players in double-figures scoring.
Rachael McDaniel (Plainfield, N.J./California (Pa.) Univ.) scored 14 points and
Mackenzie Livingston (Blairsville, Pa./IUP) netted 13.
J.J. Hilliard (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) turned in a solid outing, scoring 12 points to go along with seven assists, six rebounds and two steals.
Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh (State College, Pa./State College) chipped in with 10 points.
LHU shot 58 percent in OT and made 14 of 20 free-throw shots in the extra frame.
The Bald Eagles also benefitted from 20 points off the bench and 32 from in the paint for the game.
Lock Haven takes on Millersville University on Saturday, February 6 on the road at 1 p.m.
