Volleyball drops season-opener; Belcastro has career night

The LHU volleyball team dropped its 2016 season opener to Ashland, 3-1, spoiling head coach Shannon Gerencir debut.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team (0-1) dropped its 2016 season-opener to Ashland (1-0) 3-1 (25-15, 18-25, 25-22 & 25-13) tonight as the Bald Eagles kicked off a new era and three days of action at the LHU Tournament.

Despite the loss, senior Sydney Belcastro (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) shined with 37 digs. Her last of the night came as the fourth set came to a close and helped set a LHU school record.

Belcastro now has a school-record 1,791 digs.

The loss spoiled first-year head coach Shannon Gerencir's Haven debut, but the Bald Eagles hung strong with nationally-ranked Ashland (received votes in preseason poll).

LHU was lead offensively by a pair of juniors, Sarah Gomish (Ebensburg, Pa./Bishop Carroll) and Annie Dombrowski (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle). Gomish finished the match with a team-high nine kills and Dombrowski was a close second with eight.

Today marked the first of three straight days of action for the Bald Eagles at the LHU Tournament. Lock Haven will play twice tomorrow (Friday, September 2) vs. Shepherd (9 a.m.) and Charleston (7 p.m.).
