LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team (1-7) wrapped up play today at the UIndy Invitational with matches vs. West Texas A&M, and Truman State.
Lock Haven dropped the opening match of the day to West Texas A&M 3-0 (18-25, 7-25, 20-25), but closed the tournament in thrilling fashion.
Trailing Truman State, 2-0, LHU battled all the way back and won 3-2 for Lock Haven's first win of the 2016 season.
The Truman State win also gave first-year head coach
Shannon Gerencir her first win at The Haven.
In the loss to West Texas A&M
Olivia Sass (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) led the Lock Haven offense by assisting on 20 kills.
On the defensive end
Sydney Belcastro (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) continued her dominance by totaling 16 digs.
The second match of the day was an exciting back-and-forth battle that saw the Bald Eagles pull out a comeback win against Truman State, 3-2. (24-26, 18-25, 25-21, 28-26, 15-11)
Leading the way for Lock Haven was a combination of
Sarah Gomish (Ebensburg, Pa./Bishop Carroll) who had 20 kills,
Gabrielle Stala (Alquippa, Pa./Hopewell) who chipped in with 13 kills and
Olivia Sass (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) who had 47 assists.
Belcastro also put distance from everyone else in the record book by adding 46 digs to her career digs record at Lock Haven.
After starting the 2016 season with a busy tournament schedule the LHU volleyball team gets a break before returning to the court on Friday, September 23 (7 p.m.) at Edinboro University for the Bald Eagles PSAC opener.
