RICHMOND, Va. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (5-3, 2-1 A-10) and host Richmond (4-5, 2-1 A-10) needed 30 extra minutes of action and a shootout to settle their Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) differences, and in the end it was LHU's
Colleen McCabe (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./William Tennent) who scored in a sudden-victory shootout to give the Bald Eagles the thrilling 2-1 win over the Spiders.
Lock Haven and Richmond were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation on two second-half goals.
Neither team could score in the first or second 15-minute overtime period and after 100 minutes of action, and with the score still deadlocked at 1-1, the two teams headed to the shootout.
Again, neither team could gain the upper hand in this epic A-10 clash and after the best-of-five shootout, the two teams remained level as both teams converted on 3-of -5 shootout attempts.
Richmond went first in the sudden-victory portion of the shootout and missed, setting up the opportunity for some LHU fireworks and McCabe's dramatic finish. She took advantage and put the game away, giving the Bald Eagles the thrilling and important conference-win on the road.
Richmond went up 1-0 in the 43
rd minute, but Lock Haven tied it at 1-1 in the 56
th minute on a goal by
Tamia Roach (Petit Valley, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent Port-of-Spain).
LHU goalkeeper
Paige Stuppy (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) was brilliant throughout the marathon game and finished with 10 saves.
Today's victory caps a perfect 2-0 weekend for LHU on the road. Lock Haven is now 3-1 on the road this season after winning Friday at VCU. The two conference wins push Lock Haven to 2-1 in league action.
