LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (8-6, 3-4 A-10) was edged 2-1 in overtime today by visiting Richmond (5-9, 4-1 A-10) in Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) action.
After a scoreless first half
Alyscia Smith (Newport, Pa./Newport) opened the scoring with a sensational goal.
Tamia Roach (Petit Valley, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent Port-of-Spain) slotted a crossing pass inside the circle where Smith connected on a backhand-shot that found the back of the cage at the near post.
With just 48 seconds left in regulation Richmond's Abby Lyons tied the contest at 1-1.
Despite two early penalty corners in overtime from Lock Haven, the Spiders found the game-winner 4:54 into OT. Elise Zwicklbauer dove and redirected home a pass for the game-deciding tally.
Richmond goalkeeper Felicitas Heinzel was solid and finished with 10 saves as Lock Haven pressured her throughout.
Paige Stuppy (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) made three saves for Lock Haven.
The Bald Eagles will be right back in action tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 14) at 1 p.m. when they host Lehigh.
