MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team (11-11, 4-6 PSAC) was able to hold off Millersville (13-6, 5-5 PSAC) 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 15-11) in a nail-biter at Millersville University.
The Haven came out strong as they were able to capture the first two sets of the match, using their balanced attack on offense and playing superb defense.
The Marauders were able to rally and take the following two sets to knot the match up at two sets apiece and head to a decisive fifth set.
In the fifth set, the Bald Eagles were able to make the plays they needed to in order to pick up a very thrilling victory.
The balanced Lock Haven attack was led by
Breanna McDonald (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) as she tallied 16 kills.
Chloe Williams (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and
Veronica Morrison (Sugar Run, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) both tallied double digit kills of their own.
On defense, the Bald Eagles as a unit were magnificent. As a team, LHU was able to rack up an astounding 128 digs and 21 total blocks.
Shaye Whiteman (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) led the five Bald Eagles that tallied double digit digs with 49 while
Gabrielle Stick (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) was second on the team with 23 digs.
For Whiteman, it was another sensational outing. The redshirt-sophomore has led the nation (DII) in digs for much of the year and she was on-point again tonight on the way to 49, which set a single-match record. It was an all-match record (3-set, 4-set, 5-set), which the next highest checking in at 46 in 2016.
Williams led the block party for the Haven, tallying five block assists and a solo block while Stick and McDonald were able to add 3 block assists apiece.
Kristen Nealon (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood) was a jack of all trades for LHU, leading the team with 49 assists and racking up 18 digs.
Lock Haven will return to the court on Saturday, October 21 when they travel to Shippensburg. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
