Softball splits at Mansfield; Mathes’ 9th-inning RBI-single key in Game-1 win

The LHU softball team split a PSAC Central doubleheader at Mansfield today.

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (14-14, 5-3 PSAC Central) split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division doubleheader today at rival Mansfield University (15-8, 5-3 PSAC Central).

Lock Haven won game one 2-1 in nine innings, but Mansfield won game two, 5-4, despite a tremendous Bald Eagle rally in the seventh.

Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) drove in the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth in game one as Lock Haven won 2-1 in extra innings (9 inn.).

Trailing 1-0, McKenna Garlock (Three Springs, Pa./Southern Huntingdon) tied the game in the sixth on a RBI-single of her own.

Garlock finished 2 for 4 at the plate and Rachel Mouillesseaux (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) added a pair of hits.

Bekah Slattery (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) was sensational in the circle, as she struck out seven on the way to the complete-game extra-inning victory. For Slattery it was her eighth of the season. She scattered five hits.

Mansfield hung on and won game two 5-4 despite a strong Haven rally.

LHU was down 5-1 as the two teams headed to the seventh and the Bald Eagles rallied for three runs to make it a one-run game, but that rally was capped there, and the Mounties hung on for the 5-4 victory and split.

Michelle Holweger (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) went 2 for 4 and drove in a pair a runs in the seventh for LHU. Garlock was 2 for 4 with a RBI and Jessica Strouse (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) added a pair of game-two hits.
