Smith’s early OT goal lifts LHU over Central Michigan

Alysica Smith scored just 54 seconds into overtime and the LHU field hockey team downed visiting Central Michigan, 3-2.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Alyscia Smith (Newport, Pa./Newport) scored just 54 seconds into overtime and the Lock Haven University field hockey team (2-0) edged out Central Michigan (0-2), 3-2 (OT) in a Sunday afternoon thriller.

With the win Lock Haven improved to 2-0 on the young season after the Bald Eagles opened the season with a 4-1 win over Sacred Heart on Friday.

LHU rallied in the second half after trailing 2-1 at halftime. With just 10 minutes to play, Tamia Roach (Petit Valley, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent Port-of-Spain) scored and tied the match at 2-2.

The Bald Eagle defensive unit strengthened in the second half and limited just one CMU shot.

Central Michigan scored first and Alli Huddleson's goal in the sixth minute had the visitors up 1-0.

Dana-Lee De Gannes (Maraval, Trinidad and Tabogo/Maraval) tied the match at 1-1 just over two minutes after the Chippewas went up 1-0. De Gannes took a perfect crossing pass from Roach and fired the ball to the far post, beating CMU goalkeeper Lily Amadio, who was solid throughout the 70-plus minutes of play today.

Jasmine Brooks converted on a penalty stroke in the 23rd minute and CMU once again led. The visitors held that 2-1 lead at halftime.

The Bald Eagles pressed for much of the second half and were rewarded in the 61st minute as Roach collected a Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago/Bishop Anesty East) pass, before sliding into the cage at the far post.

As the whistle blew to start overtime, Lock Haven took immediate control and rushed into the CMU zone. The early pressure forced a penalty corner and just 54 seconds in the extra frame, Smith collected a Tia Judy (East Prospect, Pa./Homeschooled) insert and ripped the ball home for the game-winning goal.

LHU goalkeeper Paige Stuppy (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) held strong and finished with three saves.

The Bald Eagles will return to play on Friday, September 1 at Townson (7 p.m.).
