PHILADELPHIA – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (6-2, 1-1 A10) looked primed for the upset after
Alyscia Smith (Newport, Pa./Newport) scored just 2:11 into the Bald Eagles Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) match at Saint Joseph's (0-0, 0-0 A10), but in the end the No. 23 ranked Hawks used a strong second half to down LHU, 3-1.
Smith was the big story for Lock Haven as she scored her team-high sixth goal of the season just over two minutes into the contest. Smith, who finished with three shots knocked in her own rebound just minutes in after a scramble in front of the cage.
The hosts tied the match at 1-1 in the 20
th minute and the score remained 1-1 at halftime.
Saint Joseph's scored two second-half (55', 66') goals to hold off Lock Haven.
Paige Stuppy (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) made six saves.
The Bald Eagles opened A-10 play on Friday (Sept. 15) with a 2-1 overtime win at La Salle.
After three straight weekends on the road, the Bald Eagles will return home for a pair of matches on Homecoming Weekend. LHU will host Virginia Commonwealth on Friday, September 22 (3 p.m.) and Massachusetts on Sunday, September 24 at 12 p.m. Both Homecoming Weekend contests are vs. A-10 opponents.
