LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (6-3, 1-2 A-10) opened Homecoming weekend with a narrow 2-1 overtime loss to visiting Virginia Commonwealth (7-1, 2-0 A-10) this afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, Lock Haven took a 1-0 lead 1:39 into the second half.
Tamia Roach (Petit Valley, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent Port-of-Spain) drilled a penalty corner shot to the far post that deflected home off a VCU defender.
Tia Judy (East Prospect, Pa./Homeschooled) and
Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago/Bishop Anesty East) were credited with assists on the goal.
VCU tied the game at 1-1 in the 46th minute after the Ram's leading scorer Emily McNamara beat LHU goalkeeper
Paige Stuppy (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon).
The two teams remained tied at 1-1 after 70 minutes and headed to OT. Late in the first overtime period (84'), VCU was rewarded a penalty stroke and Natalie Bohmke scored, giving Virginia Commonwealth the win.
Stuppy was solid and finished with five saves in over 83 minutes of action, and Judy turned in a stellar game on defense for Lock Haven.
The Bald Eagles will host Massachusetts on Sunday, September 24 at noon to round out LHU's Homecoming weekend.
