LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Alyscia Smith (Newport, Pa./Newport) scored an early goal to put the Lock Haven University field hockey team (6-4, 1-3 A-10) up 1-0, but visiting Massachusetts (7-3, 2-1 A-10) rallied for a 2-1 conference win.
For Smith, it marked her team-leading seventh goal of the season and it came just 7:35 in as the Bald Eagles took the early lead in the important Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) match.
UMass, the preseason A-10 favorite, scored in the 22
nd minute on a penalty stroke to tie the game at 1-1 and Sarah Hawkshaw scored in the 53
rd minute. Hawkshaw's seventh goal of the season proved to be the game-winner.
Paige Stuppy (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) made seven saves and
Tamia Roach (Petit Valley, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent Port-of-Spain) was credited with the assist on the lone Lock Haven tally.
The Bald Eagles will host Davidson on Friday, Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. in A-10 action before heading to Cornell for a Sunday (Oct. 1, 1 p.m.) non-conference contest.
