Haven downs Clarion in PSAC opener, extends win streak

The LHU women’s basketball team opened PSAC play with a thrilling 74-72 win over Clarion, extending the Bald Eagles win streak to four. Lock Haven also improved to a perfect 3-0 at home.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women's basketball team (5-1, 1-0 PSAC) opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play with another balanced scoring outing and the Bald Eagles defense held strong in the final minute as The Haven downed visiting Clarion University (5-2, 0-1 PSAC), 74-72 in a Saturday afternoon thriller.
 
With the win, Lock Haven extended its win streak to four games and improved to 3-0 at home.
 
Taylor Leidy (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) netted a team-high 15 points and Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh (State College, Pa./State College) scored 14 to pace the offense. Rileigh Devine (Etters, Pa./Red Land) scored 12 points, Bink Redman (York, Pa./William Penn) added 10 and Ahnera Parker (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) rounded out the balanced scoring effort with nine points.
 
The Bald Eagles, who had four player in the game net double-figure points, also shot 47 percent from 3-point range. LHU was 9 of 19 from downtown. Shelton-Burleigh was 2 of 3 from 3-point range and both Leidy and Devine made two 3-pointers in the win.
 
Leidy was 5 of 8 from the field. She added two rebounds and six assists.
 
Redman added three assists and eight rebounds. Parker added six rebounds in the win and Nadia Romanchock (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) netted seven points off the bench.
 
Lock Haven trailed at halftime, but used a dominant third-quarter effort to pave the way to victory.
 
As the final minute timed out, clutch shooting from the free-throw line helped spark Lock Haven as well. For the game, LHU benefitted from a 77 percent clip from the charity stripe and that bonus scoring proved large down the stretch of the PSAC win. With 30 seconds to go, Shelton-Burleigh knocked down a pair of three-throws to tie the game and put LHU up one. Devine stretched the lead to two, 74-72, late from the line, and Redman grabbed a key defensive rebound as time expired.
