Clutch shooting late key as LHU extends win streak & remains perfect at home

The LHU women’s basketball team used some clutch shooting from 3-point range in the final minutes to help the Bald Eagles hold off a charging Mercyhurst squad. With the win, Lock Haven extended its win streak, remained unbeaten at home and moved to 2-0 in PSAC play.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women's basketball team (6-1, 2-0 PSAC) dialed up some clutch 3-point shooting down the stretch which helped the Bald Eagles down visiting Mercyhurst (1-6, 0-2 PSAC), 66-60, this afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
 
With the win, Lock Haven moved to 2-0 in PSAC play and extended their overall win streak to five games. LHU also remained perfect at home (4-0) on the season. Yesterday (Saturday, Dec. 1), Lock Haven opened PSAC play with a thrilling 74-72 win over Clarion.
 
LHU led big at halftime, 40-24, but the Lakers charged back in the third quarter and it was a close game late in the fourth. In the final 5:46 of the game, Lock Haven benefitted from clutch made 3's from Rileigh Devine (Etters, Pa./Red Land), Taylor Leidy (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) and Ayanda McGill-Jefferson (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey). The big shots down the stretch proved to be a key for Lock Haven's win.
 
Devine was 5 of 9 from 3-point range and finished with a game-high 18 points. She led another sensational scoring effort from the starting five. Leidy scored 11 points and Bink Redman (York, Pa./William Penn) netted 10 to round out three players in double-figures. Starters Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh (State College, Pa./State College) and Ahnera Parker (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) finished with nine and eight points, respectively.
 
McGill-Jefferson finished with seven points, eight rebounds and two blocks off the bench.
 
Leidy had another sound all-around effort. She was 2 of 2 from 3-point range, grabbed four rebounds and she dished out four assists. Redman had seven boards and four assists. Both Devine and Shelton-Burleigh grabbed seven rebounds in the win.
 
The Bald Eagles will return to action next week (Saturday, Dec. 8) at Gannon (1 p.m.).
