LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (9-9) completed a two-game sweep of Slippery Rock University (13-10) to kick off its home contests at Lawrence Field.
Â
The Bald Eagles entered today's game coming off a 6-4 run on Spring Break. Despite the overall successful week in Florida, LHU needed to snap a three-game skid that closed the trip, which The Haven did in style with a two-game sweep of The Rock.
Â
GAME 1:
LHU plated two runs in three straight innings to pull away from Slippery Rock and earn the eventual victory in game one. After giving up the opening run in the second inning, the Bald Eagles responded and plated two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Lock Haven then scored in the third and fourth innings to extend its lead to 6-1, before The Rock scored one more time in the top of the sixth to cap the scoring.
Â
Three Lock Haven batters recorded a multi-hit game as
Bree Hilty (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) led the charge with three.
Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) and
Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa./Troy) each added two hits apiece. Caputo drove in two runs to cap her excellent game.
Â
Bekah Slattery (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) was the winning pitcher in the contest as she fired a seven inning complete game. Slattery struck out nine batters while scattering 10 hits and allowing only two earned runs.
Â
GAME 2:
Traci Kromko (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) was the story in game two as she collected four RBI's, including a double to left field with the bases loaded, that plated all three runners.
Â
Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) got the scoring going in this game when she rocketed a triple to right center field that brought home Caputo. LHU would score three more runs in the second inning to take the 4-0 lead. However Slippery Rock would answer and score one in the third and fourth before The Haven would extend its lead once again by scoring one in the fourth and three in the fifth to take the 8-2 lead.
Â
Ceely would convert both of her hits into two RBI's in the game, as Mathes and Hilty also logged two hits.
Amanda Loar (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Senior) led Lock Haven in hits as she went a perfect 3-3.
Â
Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) got the nod as the starting pitcher and fired 6 2/3 innings on her way to earning the victory. She struck out six batters and gave up three earned runs. Slattery would come into pitch with two outs in the sixth inning and all she needed was one pitch to finish the game.
