THOMASVILLE, N.C. - The Lock Haven University baseball team (6-2) was able to win both ends of a double header Sunday against Davis and Elkins (4-13) as the Bald Eagles knocked off Davis and Elkins 5-1 in game one and 13-7 in game two.
In game one, Lock Haven was able to get on the board first when they scored two runs in the top of the second inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead thanks to RBI singles by
Ethan Moore (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) and
Max Joseph ((Marlton, N.J./Harford Community College).
After the teams traded runs in the third inning, Lock Haven added two more runs in the top of the fourth thanks to an RBI double by Moore and an RBI single by
John Banes (Springfield, Pa. Cumberland CC) to jump ahead 5-1.
LHU held Davis and Elkins scoreless for the rest of the game to get the win 5-1.
Moore and
Keyshawn D'Orso (Pittsburgh Mercyhurst North East Community College) led the LHU offense with two hits apiece. Moore added two RBIs while D'Orso scored two runs.
Ross Mintzer (Glensdie, Pa./Rowan Gloucester CC) threw a gem on the hill for the Bald Eagles, throwing a complete game five-hitter while allowing no earned runs and striking out four.
In game two, Davis and Elkins got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the top of the first to jump out to a 3-0 lead. LHU was able to respond, scoring two runs in the bottom of both the first and second innings to jump ahead 4-3.
After Davis and Elkins took the lead 5-4 with a two run fifth inning, Lock Haven was able to put together a nine run fifth inning thanks to a pair of two-RBI doubles by D'Orso and Moore and a two-RBI single by
Justin Sleigh (Dubois, Pa./Dubois) that put LHU ahead 13-5.
Davis and Elkins was able to score two more runs in the top of the seventh to make it 13-7, but the Bald Eagles were able to close it out and get the win.
The LHU offense was led by Banes and
Demetrius Haskins (Pittsburgh/Taylor Alderdice) as they both tallied two hits. Haskins, Joseph,
Nick Stotler (Pittsburgh/Coker College) and
Cayden Stover (Beech Creek, Pa./Chesapeake College) all scored two runs for Lock Haven.
The Bald Eagles will travel back to Wilson, North Carolina next weekend for the team's annual Spring Break trip. The first game of the trip will be Sunday, March 11 against Mercyhurst. That game is set for a 10:00 a.m. start.
