Softball sweeps UPJ, remains unbeaten in PSAC Central play

The LHU softball team extends its win streak to double-digits in route to sweep of Pitt-Johnstown.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Lock Haven University softball team (17-9, 6-0 PSAC Central) extended its win streak to 10 games as The Haven swept Pitt-Johnstown University (7-11, 3-3 PSAC Central) on the road in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division action.

The Bald Eagles and Mountain Cats went to extra innings (nine) in game one as LHU came away with the 9-7 win before finishing the sweep with a 10-2 victory in the second contest.

Game 1
Lock Haven used a well-rounded lineup that featured nine players combining for 14 hits resulting in nine runs to earn the extra inning win.

LHU jumped out to a quick lead as they scored seven runs in the first three innings to take the 7-0 lead. However Pitt-Johnstown would respond in the fourth and fifth inning to tie the game at seven and eventually force extra innings.

Bree Hilty (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) started the ninth inning off for the Bald Eagles with an excellent at bat where she found herself down 0-2 before battling back and forcing a walk after 10 total pitches.

Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) then came up to the plate and launched a two-run homerun to left-center to break the tie.

Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) also stepped up big as she crushed the ball to left-center for a three run homerun. Hilty also chipped in with a multi-RBI game as she drove in two runs.

Helping lead the versatile Haven lineup at the plate was Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) who chipped in with three total hits.

Slattery earned the victory on the mound as she pitched all nine innings scattering eight hits while fanning eight batters.

Game 2
The Bald Eagles once again scored early and often as they put up runs in four straight innings including a four run fourth inning.

Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa/Loyalsock) was lights out on the mound as she fired four innings allowing only one hit. She had a no-hitter in tact through 3 2/3 innings and also struck out three batters.

Taryn Williams (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) took over on the mound in the fifth inning and closed out the game getting the last three outs.

Leading The Haven at the plate was the trio of Amanda Loar (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Senior), Caputo and Loar as they all recorded at least two hits. Caputo drove in four RBI's on three hits while Carpenter added two RBI's on two hits including her second homerun of the day. Loar capped the group with two hits.
