Softball sweeps Bloom, clinches PSAC playoff berth

The LHU softball team used a sweep of rival Bloomsburg to move to 14-0 in PSAC Central play and clinch a berth in the PSAC Playoffs.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Lock Haven University softball team (26-10, 14-0 PSAC Central) used some clutch hitting and big time pitching performances to sweep Bloomsburg University (14-17, 6-8 PSAC Central) for the second time this season as the Bald Eagles moved to 14-0 in
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division games and clinched a playoff berth for the third consecutive year.
 
LHU was able to win game one, 7-3, before taking game two, 4-1.
 
Game 1: W, 7-3
 
After the Huskies started the game with a 3-run home run in the top of the first, The Haven was able to settle in and begin to cut into the lead almost immediately.
 
Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) sent a solo homer over the center field fence in the bottom of the first to cut the Bloom lead to 3-1.
 
A Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) two-run single in the third inning highlighted a four-run inning that turned the LHU two-run deficit into a two-run lead.
 
The Bald Eagles were able to add an insurance run in each the fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead to 7-3 and held on for the win.
 
Bree Hilty (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) led the Lock Haven offense, going a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs. Caputo also had a big game, going 3-4 at the dish with three runs scored and two RBIs of her own.
 
Carpenter added two RBIs in the game while Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) added two hits and an RBI.
 
Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) was strong in the circle, throwing a complete-game five-hitter while allowing three runs and striking out 10.
 
Game 2: W, 4-1
 
Bloomsburg once again jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first as they led 1-0 after the first inning. In the second, Lock Haven was able to scored three runs as Moriah Lindsey (Woolrich, Pa./Central Mountain) and Traci Kromko (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) each had RBI singles to put LHU in front, 3-1.
 
LHU added another run in the third to extend the lead to 4-1 as the Bald Eagles held off the Huskies for the rest of the game to get the win.
 
Lindsay led the Lock Haven offense, going 2-3 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Kromko and Amanda Loar (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Senior) also added RBIs for LHU.
 
Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa/Loyalsock) was solid for Lock Haven as she went the distance in the circle while allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out seven.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bald Eagles will travel to Indiana, Pa. tomorrow (April 21) to take on the Crimson Hawks of IUP in another PSAC Central double header. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
