Shane Colegrove’s double OT winner sends men’s soccer past NYIT

The LHU men’s soccer team wins a non-conference thriller 4-3 in double overtime.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa.  – As day turned into night it created a picturesque evening at Hubert Jack Stadium. Thanks to a natural hat trick by Andrea DiSomma  (Lancaster, Pa./ Manheim Township) in just over six minutes of game action and overtime heroics by Shane Colegrove (Athens, Pa./ Athens) it sent the Bald Eagles home happy picking up their second win in a row in a non-conference thriller.

In the 7th minute of play, LHU had their best chance of the opening half when DiSomma collected a loose ball, turned quickly and fired a shot that was ultimately turned away by the Bears keeper. DiSomma had another golden opportunity with minutes to go in the first half that was also saved.

After a flurry of corners from New York Tech, they were finally able to capitalize giving the Bears a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

After a slow start to the first half, there was plenty of action to go around in the second. New York Tech got the scoring started, however that was short lived.

DiSomma found his stride in the second half. In a span of just under six minutes DiSomma scored a natural hat trick. His first came in the 50th minute collecting a loose ball then putting the ball away. Just three minutes later DiSomma scored his 2nd of the game courtesy of Kemali Green (Philadelphia/ YSC Academy) who fired the initial shot leaving the rebound in front of an open net. With three goals tonight, DiSomma now has five goals in his past two games.

Saving the best for last, DiSomma stepped up from about 24 yards out striking a wonderful free kick that cleared the wall and dipped before the keeper even had a chance to move off his line.

New York Tech would not go down without a fight as the Bears were able to tie the game in the 62nd minute of play making the score 3-3.

For the remainder of the second half each team was pressing but were unable to find that elusive fourth goal.

With not much going on in the first overtime period, the second half saw back and forth action in hopes of finding the game winner.

As the game looked to be headed to a 3-3 tie, LHU was able to earn their fifth corner of the game setting up the eventual game winner. Taking the corner was Beckham Sibiski (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) who found Colegrove making a back post run who rose up for the game winning header sending the Lock Haven faithful into pandemonium.

Next up:
LHU will return to PSAC East play on the road at East Stroudsburg, Sunday, October 6 and is set for a 3:30 p.m. kick-off.
