MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (9-7, 5-2 A-10) entered today's road game at Saint Louis (0-15, 0-7 A-10) calm and focused, and it showed, as the Bald Eagles put together a solid 60 minutes and the total team effort powered LHU to a dominating, 4-0, victory.
The outstanding effort provided a critical late-season Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) win, as the Bald Eagles pushed closer to a playoff berth. Lock Haven is now 9-7 overall and will head into the final weekend of Atlantic 10 play - next weekend - with a 5-2 record, which certainly keeps the Bald Eagles in line to secure an A-10 Tournament berth.
All A-10 Tournament participants will be finalized after all the dust settles on the final weekend of league action next Sunday.
Today, it was all LHU, as Lock Haven outshot the hosts 19-4 and the Bald Eagles held a commanding 12-5 advantage in penalty corners.
LHU's goals came from
Tia Judy (East Prospect, Pa./Homeschooled),
Amy Stevens (Castle Creek, N.Y./Whitney Point),
MacKenzie Farley (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and
Jazmin Palma (Entre Rios Province, Argentina./Colegio Sagrado Corazon de Jesus).
Judy opened the scoring just before halftime when she knocked home a pass from
Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago/Bishop Anstey East). The goal came just thirty seconds before halftime.
Stevens made it 2-0 in the 47
th minute when she tucked home a pass from Farley. Farley had a goal and an assist today, as she made it 3-0 with her goal in the 58
th minute.
Palma capped the scoring late, converting a long shot in the final minute of the contest.
Another shutdown-defensive effort from the entire lineup limited the Billiken chances today and pushed goalkeeper
Joaquina Orlandini (Concordia, Entre Rios, Argentina/San Antonio School) to be needed to make just one save, which she did, in another shutout-effort.
The win was Lock Haven's second straight, with both wins coming by way of 4-0 shutout-victories. Overall, the shutout marked LHU and Orlandini's sixth of the season.
Now, just two games remain for the Bald Eagles on the 2019 regular season schedule. Next weekend, Lock Haven will play on the road twice.
LHU will open the weekend vs. A-10 foe Saint Francis on Friday, November 1, before playing at Rider on Sunday, November 3 in the regular-season finale.
