Devine breaks 3-point record in women’s basketball season opener

Despite a pair of historic performances, the LHU women’s basketball team fell to Fairmont in Friday’s season opener

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Lock Haven University women's basketball team (0-1) fell to the Fairmont State University Falcons (1-0) 79-70 in overtime on Friday at Joe Retton Arena.

The Bald Eagles edged out front in the first quarter, taking a 16-15 lead. Fairmont came back strong in the second and carried a 35-32 lead into halftime, but a back-and-forth second half left the two teams knotted at 63. After overtime began with a minute of scoreless play, the Falcons took the lead, holding on to it for the rest of extra play.

Rileigh Devine (Etters, Pa./Red Land) highlighted the Bald Eagles effort, putting up 16 points and four three-pointers to bring her career three-point total to 143, breaking the school record. The record previously belonged to Suzie Baird, who tallied 142 threes from 1990-1994.

Freshman Marena Lonardi (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) led Lock Haven with 17 points, while Jaynelle Robinson (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport (Monroe CC)) finished with 22 rebounds, the most in a single game since Lysa Mealing totaled 25 against Kutztown on Feb. 3, 2016. The historic effort did not stop there, as the Bald Eagles combined for 62 rebounds, the most Haven has recorded in a single game dating back to the 2001-2002 season.

UP NEXT: The Bald Eagles return to the court tomorrow afternoon, facing off against Concord University at 2 P.M. in Fairmont.
