MYRTLE BEACH, SC. - The Lock Haven University softball team (0-2) opened the season today at the Snowbird Freezeout in Myrtle Beach. The Bald Eagles fell in the first game, 3-0 to Southern New Hampshire. In game two, the Haven dropped a tight 5-4 game against Saint Anselm.
Saint Anselm was the 2018 National runner-up and is currently ranked No. 4 in the NCAA rankings while Southern New Hampshire was receiving votes from the National poll as well.
Game 1: L, 3-0
Lock Haven would fall behind 3-0 in the first two innings off two SNHU homeruns.
Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) would pitch a complete game two-hitter and allowed two earned runs. Slattery would strike out seven on the day.
Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton),
Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore),
Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and
Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook,Pa./North Pocono) would all tally hits for the Bald Eagles.
Game 2: L, 5-4
Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning,
Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) sent a 2-0 offering over the left field fence for a three-run home run that tied the game at 4-4.
Heading into the final inning with the game tied, Saint Anselm was able to add a run in the top of the inning to take the lead and kept LHU scoreless in the bottom half to edge out the Bald Eagles, 5-4.
Carpenter led the LHU offense, tallying the bigtime home run and three RBI's in the game. Five other Bald Eagles recorded hits in the game as the team gave Saint Anselm all they could handle.
Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) got the nod in the circle for the Haven, going four innings strong while giving up four hits and recording a strikeout. Slattery finished the final three innings, allowing three hits and also recording a strikeout.

The Bald Eagles will return to the field tomorrow, February 16, for day two of the Snowbird Freezeout when they take on Felician (10:00 AM) and Le Moyne (12:00 PM).
