MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Pitchers
Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) and
Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) threw a pair of gems, but the Lock Haven University softball team (1-3) split its games today (Saturday, February 16) on the second day of play for the Bald Eagles at the 2019 Snowbird Freeze Out in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
After officially opening the 2019 season yesterday, LHU picked up its first win of the season with today's win over Felician. LHU took the day's opener 3-1, before being edged out by Le Moyne, 1-0.
Gee and Slattery combined for 19 strikeouts.
Gee matched her career-high and struck out 10 to power Lock Haven to the day's opening win over Felician, 3-1.
At the plate,
Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) went 2 for 3 with a RBI. Both
Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and
Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) drove in runs for Lock Haven.
In the narrow 1-0 loss to Le Moyne, Slattery, a preseason All-American, did all she could and finished with nine strikeouts.
This weekend marks the opening weekend of the 2019 season for the Bald Eagles as they make their annual trip south to Myrtle Beach for the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament. It marks the fourth straight season where Lock Haven has opened their respective season in South Carolina.
With four of six games this weekend in the books, Lock Haven will look to close out the opening weekend of the 2019 season tomorrow (Sunday, February 17) with a pair of games. LHU will take on Merrimack at 10 a.m. and Goldey-Beacom at 12 p.m. to wrap up the tournament.
